Bamboo FAQ

Is all bamboo flooring similar?

No. Quality differs from manufacturers and suppliers. The quality of the final flooring is depends on the quality of the source materials used during manufacturing. The manufacturing process also affects final quality.

For these reasons, Timberland has spent many years selecting only the best manufacturers. We carry out frequent inspections of our suppliers facilities and the bamboo material to ensure the highest quality is maintained at all times across our product range.

How tough and scratch resistant are your flooring products?

A durable finish is the first line of defence to protect your beautiful bamboo floors. On Timberland's pre-finished bamboo flooring products, our manufacturing partners use a water-based, solvent free, 10-coat German 'Klumpp Coatings' finish with an aluminum oxide wear layer to boost abrasion resistance, plus two polyurethane topcoats for added protection. Other manufacturers only use 6-8 coats typically.

What happens if it scratches - can it be sanded back and polished?

Bamboo floors like any other timber product will scratch if not looked after properly. All our floors come with a "Timberland Floor Care" package to make sure your floor retains its beauty and value for many years to come.

There are a range of products available to cover minor scratches such as orange oil, bees wax and also a product range called Timberland's Scratch Cover available from Timberland. Surface scratches can be polished or if deep can be sanded or the boards can be replaced.

How do you install Bamboo flooring?

Premium grade bamboo flooring can be installed by various methods depending on site conditions and the bamboo floor you choose. Usually, solid bamboo floors are installed as a floating floor. However, the boards can also be glued directly onto the sub floor which results in a less hollow sound or fixed directly to plywood. Feel free to contact us for more information about the installation technique that is right for you.

Do you organise the installation?

Yes. Timberland prides itself on providing complete end-to-end project solutions. We can work directly with you, the client, or with your builder/architect to achieve the finest result, on time and on budget.

How do I determine the direction in which to install my bamboo flooring?

To decide where to begin the layout of your floor, consider incoming light. It is usually best to install bamboo floors with the planks running parallel to light coming in windows or glass doors. For any installation, the starting wall should be as long and straight as possible.

Will there be any cutting waste?

In an average installation, approximately 5% to 10% of the total area to be covered will be wasted for several reasons, typically cuts, planks damaged during installation.

Why don't we grow bamboo in Australia?

The bamboo species we use for our Strand woven is Phyllostachys Pubescens (common name: Moso) which is harvested at maturity at 5 1/2 years for maximum stability and hardness and grows prolifically in China. The climate in China is ideal for the growth of this particular species.

Are you not destroying natural habitat and food source of Pandas?

Some people have expressed concern that the natural habitat and food supply of Pandas will be harmed by bamboo product manufacture. The species of bamboo used for our products (Mao or Moso bamboo) is very different to that sought by Pandas and the manufacture of our products has no negative impact on the Pandas environment.

Will my floor be varied in colour like solid timber or laminate flooring?

Timberland bamboo floors are all hand selected for colour tones and packed to give a comparatively even coloured floor. However, a small variation is maintained to achieve a natural look. We can achieve varying degrees of colour variation based on the customer’s preferences but please understand this is not a perfect science.

How long have you been in business?

The two directors Jerry and Jacky were involved in pioneering the introduction of bamboo flooring in NSW in 2004. Since then,Timberland has gone from strength to strength in all aspects of production and is considered the industry leader for bamboo flooring.

How do I maintain my bamboo flooring?

In order to maximize the durability and beauty of your bamboo flooring, we recommend the following practices as part of your floor’s normal care and maintenance.

  • Place doormats or rugs at entrances to collect moister, sand, grit and other potentially damaging substances from being tracked onto your bamboo floor.
  • Dust mop or vacuum with a soft accessory to keep your bamboo floor clean from dust, dirt or grit. Bamboo flooring cleans easily with a Swiffer or similar type dry mop.
  • For sticky spots, use a soft damp cloth to gently scrub the floor. If necessary, use a generic hardwood floor cleaner. Do not use steel wool or other abrasive scouring pads.
  • Do not use harsh detergents, abrasive cleansers, or corrosive chemicals to clean your bamboo floor.
  • Avoid excessive water. Use mats in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry room to protect against spills. If a spill occurs, blot it up immediately with a dry cloth or slightly damp mop.
  • Use only colourfast and non-scratch carpeting or pads on your bamboo floor.
